Back to What's Important!

This weekend marks the 8th Anniversary of The Greears becoming a family. Until 8 years ago it was just Alana and Vince enjoying each other, having a lot of time and quiet on their hands. And then came The Wonder, God's Own Creation, forever enhancing our experiance on this Earth. We mark the day August 31 with a special family holiday where we all work together to plan what we should do to celebrate. We've had some fun times... Dog Fish Bay, Anchorage, but we seem to be most enjoying the car ride to Kenai/Nikiski where we (hold your breath) eat at McDonald's Playland and then go to the Nikiski Rec Center for an afternoon of water sliding. This year we are lucky to celebrate on the weekend and so today we went on a boat ride to Halibut Cove Lagoon. The fun in the sun can be seen on the embedded slide show.

More fun to come!

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin...The Girlfriend Klatch

This post is in response to the fact that I have had more hits to my blog than I've ever had and that our phone has been ringing off the hook from friends and family (and political action committees) who are wondering about Sarah Palin. Here is an Alaskan mom's opinion.

There is something that happened today that needs to be documented. I was in the middle of the hurricane that is our family getting ready for school when Falcom had earned the right to turn on the computer. I was trying to convince Marina that school was a good idea for today by bribing her with mangoes when I heard Falcom say, "John McCain picks Sarah Palin as running mate".

As the mother of a kid with learning differences, (specifications, disabilities, whatever!) just hearing him read something so bizarre was amazing! But was he reading? That couldn't be happening? Could it? But how would he make that up? I raced over there and it was true.

There she was, our sexy, hair twisting, Safety officer loving and hating, oil money bail out check passer-outer, Sarah Palin, in her standard API picture gracing the headline of MSN.

Since then, I've had more hits on my blog than I've ever had (not to mention phone calls from distant relatives) and I have decided that I'd better talk about the question everyone has on their lips; What the heck!?! Where did that come from!?!

This is a sample from my coffee with Priscilla today, where we klatched about Sarah Palin.

Before you go on, I'd like to explain something about Rural Alaska and Rural Alaskans that I have found true. We can disagree about how things are run, and we often do, but we still like each other and get along. This is not a land of Hatfield and McCoy. This is a place where the winter is hard. The summer is busy. If you are driving down the road and see someone in trouble you stop. You don't look for clues as to whether or not you should stop. You don't stop to consider that you might get robbed. You stop. (If you are a person who does not have people stop for you, you take that as a hint that you have really screwed up in some way and you'd better start flying right.)

We know each other and we help each other because there is not a person here who at some point has not had to lean on neighbors. Sarah Palin gets this concept. It seems people in much of the lower 48 have forgotten that and that is what McCain is hoping she will bring with her.

I believe that common sense is like a foreign language. If you don't use it, you loose it. I love Alaska because you still need to have common sense to live here. I imagine that Sarah Palin is fluent.

I will tell you that although I don't know Sarah Palin, I know that I am sure that she and I have more in common than not. My groovy neighbor has hung out with her and her handsome husband. I may never have had any desire to shoot anything, but I am sure that our shared Alaskan experience has many similarities. And now we both have children that receive special services.

I'm excited or her! How wonderful that she has been noticed. I'm more excited for her to be chosen than I was for Jewel to get a recording contract.

I don't like it that Sarah Palin supposedly endorsed a No Vote on proposition 4. That does not mean that I do not like Sarah Palin. I don't like it that Sarah Palin is so Pro-Life and still probably buys Chinese products from Wal-Mart. (Chinese fetuses don't count?) But that too does not mean that I do not like Sarah Palin.

Here is where I feel the problem with McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. This is the kind of state we are...we had 4 Ballot Measures this election. 4. One was aerial game management and one was setting up a gambling commission. How much is happening in Washington every single day?

The summer she was running for Governor, she marched in the parade at the Kenai Peninsula Fair. Be aware that this is the smallest fair, probably on Earth. My kids had decided they wanted to march for those 35 people standing along the 3/4 mile stretch of highway that runs through Ninilchik. Falcom was wearing an outfit that made him look like Chaka Kahn. He looked fabulous and was sitting in the bed of a pick up. Marina wore her Superman suit and was riding her bike. Sarah Palin came to Falcom and shook his hand as she went around to all of the other 4 parade contestants. When she left there was not a man in the area who did not say, "I am totally voting for her, she is so hot!" And that became the mantra I heard throughout the remainder of the election season. "If we have to look at someone every day, it sure doesn't hurt that she's pretty."
I was voting for her because she was not Murkowski and she was kind to Fal.

And now we have the first woman GOP candidate. So what was the coffee klatch between a Republican and an Independent-ish Alaskan like? Here is how it went:

(warning: some of this is a bit caddy, but after all we said about Hillary Clinton, it's really not that bad.)
  • "I date a Mayor. I know what his responsibilities are like. OK, Governor, yes, potential future president, NO!"

  • "I feel blatantly pandered to. Obama, hot. McCain, not. Obama young...McCain not pro-life enough for the GOP. I liked him that he was States Rights! We don't need in Alaska what they need in California. That's what it means to be Republican I thought! So, who did they pick? It's pandering! It's not because of actual experience. It's because she gave birth to a down syndrome baby and they want to make the Christians happy."

  • "McCain is so old! He's not that healthy! What if something happens to him! Oh, God!"

  • "I doubt any news organizations say that we were so pissed at (then Governor) Murkowski after he cancelled our longevity checks to seniors and disabled and then bought himself a jet that we were all going to vote for anyone who was not him and the fact that she is so hot and nice just made her a shoe in!"
  • "I am going to get so sick of J.H. telling me how hot she is every time he sees her with McCain!"

  • "I bet every woman in the country is too be having the same problem. You know, she probably stopped breast feeding in order to campaign."

  • "She was working for us! What the heck!"

  • "Do you think the media is going to mention that our legislature is only in session, like, half the year?"

  • "I did think it was super cool that she didn't tell anyone that she was pregnant until right up to when she had the baby. You know that old boys school would have totally lame ducked her and blamed every decision she made on hormones."

  • "You know, I am going to kind of hate to see her get eaten alive by all the media writing shit about her."

  • "Yea, Me too."
  • "Gosh her husband is a good looking man!"

She got picked because she is young and pretty and she is so good that she is sparkly. Does she have the experience to lead our country. No, not really. Will she have to lean on the same "old school dudes" because of her inexperience once she gets there because she doesn't know stuff? Yes, I think so.

Did McCain use common sense to pick Palin...I fear not.

Marina At Play

It is so fun to see Marina having fun at school. Thank you Heidi for the darling Fairy Dress! I left her and had my own fun on a walk in Suzanne's neighborhood. Please watch the slide show to your right.

Then I met up with all the neighbors at Fritz Creek Store and found out a bunch of great information from Charlotte.

Then Otto inspired the above contest.

Then I called Janet M. Then the kids got home on the bus. No. Not much housework is getting done around here.

Regular Tuesday with Irene - It's Irene's Birthday!

Happy Birthday Irene! I always feel so blessed that you are in my life!

It was like a flash, a whirlwind, a typhoon force gale, and then suddenly they all...everyone... were at school and Vince and I were alone at the house again. But today we had things to do in town. Vince needed to drop off some halibut rods to a fellow he has met from Soldotna who came down for fishing. We need some chicken food. I need to have coffee with Irene and Maya. So, Vince dropped me off with the women Wise and he went his own way (which I am sure included a visit with Sharon and a sticky bun at Two Sisters).

Topics Discussed:

I decided that I didn’t need to act totally broke anymore and that I could buy myself a travel mug that I really like. The message on this mugs speaks volumes to my state of mind.

Marina's first day of school and her so so cute communication with Dad while on the school bus. "Dad, do you read me? Over" They both realized that it was not until the bus had left the school and passed the first hill did the reception come in. Even then, with all those noisy children in the background, conversation was tricky.

Irene wants loyal readers to know that she does not have a specific “re gifting closet”. She has a place where there are a few pharmaceutical ‘suck up’ gifts that she and Matt were given, but that congress had passed a law that was going to prevent that from happening so much anymore and so those days are nearly gone.

How Falcom tricked the ladies in the Cafeteria at school to give him a free hot lunch and then, in perfect Falcom form, narked himself out the second he stepped off the bus. "Well Mom, something happened, and I know you are going to be mad about it but I am going to tell you anyway..." (yes, it was the most unhealthy hot lunch day of the week...corn pups, french fries, juice and chocolate milk.) I had to write a note and sent it along with my repayment of $2.75 that said, "Don't be fooled by this cunning and manipulative child! I send a healthy-ish lunch to school with him daily. Being an Islander he is already on the diabetic super highway. In the future, please have Laura call me before giving him a lunch. Thank you!"

Riley has so much homework in school this year that Irene can not imagine how Riley is going to make it with his sanity and love for school intact.

That Marina has so little homework in school that she is becoming disappointed.

In which I don’t know what has gotten into me that I have become such a girly girl and in the past month have acquired 5 very sparkly polishes for fingers and toes.

We found Maya eats much better when receiving a pedicure and chao (traditional Vietnamese rice porridge) simultaneously. This may be one of the marks of a future Diva. We wondered if this was not unlike the signs that the Tibetan Monks look for when searching for the next Dali Lama. "Ah, yes, the lock of grey hair." "Ah, yes, the thrill of pampering...."

Dinner plans with Vince and I for her birthday tonight.

How her new accountant told her about a friend of his who started a company in Vietnam, and isn't it wonderful...he can hire American trained engineers for $8 an hour. We reflected on this strange form of slavery that many Americans choose to rationalize and then I said, "Maybe I need to figure out a company that I can start over there, then I'll have to visit a few times a year." Then Irene said, "Then you'll be (like......)" and I said, " I would never demand my fruit to be cut for me before I awake. Coffee poured, maybe..."

John Irving: Weird or Genius

And then, as always, The Things We Can't Blog About.

When Vince came to pick me up the dog, cat, and kid all jumped on him like he has some magic magnetizing force that attracts the wild energy. Irene will post a picture of it on her blog. Check it out.

And then, at 6.30, after organizing all the kids, Vince and I ran down to the homestead where we met Matt and Irene for a birthday dinner and laughing good time.

The appetizers Irene selected were Oysters on the half shell and wild mushrooms in garlic and wine cream sauce. Both items were grown locally. The boys would not eat the mushrooms at first because they know who had done the picking, but that didn't stop me or Irene. They were AWESOME! I'll admit, I was secretly hoping for some accidental psychedelic trip...just for fun and old times sake, but no such luck!

Then after salads came the main course. Irene had a mango salad I had an oyster mushroom tariyaki cream sauce over seafood and noodles. I had to pick it because it had the word DIVA in the title. It was awesome! I also picked it because Vince was getting my second choice, a steak with a blue cheese sauce. I figured he'd share. Well, he didn't say a peep the entire time he was eating and when I looked over his plate was wiped clean. He said, "That was the best steak I've ever eaten at a restaurant in my life." I said, "You didn't even offer me a bite!" He said, "I know, I was sitting here quietly hoping you wouldn't notice how much I was enjoying it because I didn't want to share."

Oh, and I didn't photograph the killer bread (that I dipped in the sauce of the wild mushrooms) and the salad (which I did not request to have the dressing put on the side). This picture represents the only non caloric portion of the night.

Even though I was not hungry I had to sing happy birthday and take a few bites of birthday cake. Yum.

Vince and I left there feeling so happy. It was a nice, slow meal (practically European style) with great friends and good laughs. (We only had one phone call, from Falcom, who was hiding in my room whispering while he was narking out DeeJay for telling them to go to bed. Ah, peace!) Thanks for a great time! Happy Birthday Irene...We love you!

PS. Dear friends of the WW, Suzanne and I will be starting back up the first Monday after labor day...these dalliances in delicacies will not go on forever, I promise.

Marina's First Day of School

For the first time, this morning Marina was the first one awake. She has been reved up and ready to go to school for several days now. Finally, the starting gun was shot. Last night, as the High Schoolers were doing their pre-algebra and the 3rd grader was working on his reading log, she assured them that in one more day she too would be joining them around the dining room table doing homework. She selected this lovely velvet dress with diamonds and pearls for her first day.
Marina informed us last night that we would not need to pick her up from school. She would be riding the bus. "And if you come there anyway I will race to the bus and get on before you can catch me so...no sense in coming." Vince gave her one of our long range walkie-talkies. They agreed that she would call him on it as she was getting onto the school bus. She was all over that! We'll see if it works.
Because the week before she had been following us to McNeil to drop off the boys, this day held no mystery for her. Her lunch was packed. Her back pack was secure. She marched right into the school and knew exactly where to place her belongings. She was surprised that the kids were then led into the gym where they played some movement games. She was thinking that they would immediately get into their 'hard subjects.'
As a parent, I thought it was brilliant. De was able to do her meet and greet. The parents were able to dawdle around visiting and sharing their mutual angst. There was plenty of opportunity for the paparazzi to do their thing. It was a fine start.
This is Marina's teacher De Patch. She is the ultimate kindergarten teacher who knows just what to say to a fretting parent: "Oh My Gosh! I'm in Love with her Already!"
I won't pretend that I am not a bit sad. The sadness was worse last week (fortunately). Vince and I left the school feeling sentimental. I said, "None of these kids was more ready for school than her." He said, "I think she is going to be very upset when she comes home tonight with no homework!" We both laughed and now I am starting to imagine what my first day of quiet will be like.

Central Peninsula Hospital Party

This evening marked first social event of Vince's new job at Central Peninsula Hospital. It was a dinner and activity night with a pirate theme! Don't we look festive?

We received the invitation in the mail a few weeks ago. I immediately wanted to go. Vince was hesitant. It was going to be after his third day of work. He was going to be tired to drive home. What about the kids? I said, "I want to go out, see where you work, we'll drink coffee and I will find something to do with the kids." I didn't tell him about my compulsive need to do different and unique things, I didn't have too. He returned the RSVP.

Many of you know that our dear friend and neighbor Valda went to Latvia for several weeks this summer. While she was gone I was in charge for the upkeep of her vast estate. (Read that; Mowing her massive lawn). Because Valda is gracious (and she knows how that mower can shake the teeth out of the drivers head) she insisted on finding a way to repay me. For instance she'd say, "What's your favorite restaurant?" and I'd reply, "We eat out at a rate that feels like nightly. I don't have a favorite." Finally after a couple of days of this I finally had a good idea, "Why don't you watch the kids so that Vince and I can go to this hospital party in Soldotna."
I could tell from the look in her eyes she would have preferred buying us a gift certificate for any dollar amount to the Homestead, but, she swallowed down her anxiety and agreed to the plan.

I had a lovely afternoon in Kenai. I returned a light to the Home Depo for Valda. I bought Irene, Suzanne and I some new glitter fingernail polishes. I putzed around and enjoyed just thinking my own thoughts.

The party was at the old Libby, McNeil, and Libby cannery/warehouse, which sits right on the river and has a restaurant and coffee shop and bunk houses. What a great location for SO MANY PEOPLE! There must have been six hundred people there. Because we were late getting there there were no seats at the full group tables and because we didn't know anyone we didn't feel like we could comfortably barge in. We decided to sit alone. I didn't mind at all because it gave me more time to look around. Vince had the prime rib. I had this Cordon Blue with this funky rice pilaf. Now that I am part Micronesian, it is hard to eat rice that has been prepared for over 400 people. I think I have become a rice snob. I never thought that could happen.

There was a raffle with door prizes. This is a common event at all hospital parties we have attended. One of the interesting aspects of this raffle for me was noticing the difference in the items up for grabs between the towns of Homer and Soldotna. At the Homer party there were many resturants gift certificates and many gift bags full of artsy stuff. Here in Soldotna the main raffle gifts were $50 gas vouchers and $75 certificates to Froto's Restaurant. Oh, and there was a $75 tire service. Not better or worse, I think it just points out the different mood between the communities. Sadly, even thought Vince asked the lady to keep our ticket on top, we did not win. Doesn't Vince look slick with his rainbow cumber bun. Most people there were really dressed for their pirate rolls. Guys with dreads and full Jack Sparrow. Girls in bustiers and high pumps. (Yes Irene, I could have gotten away with a tiny mini skirt with the high boots. Many people were sporting that kind of vibe.) I was a little to shy to ask to take pictures. Next time, I will not be.

One of the things that Vince was really looking forward to about the evening was a poker tourney. There was one building that was dedicated to Karaoke and another to disco. I didn't want to sing if my girlfriends weren't there to hoot, and I didn't want to disco alone. In the same building as the poker was a Wii game set up, so I decided to do that while Vince played cards. For a while a nice gal bowled with me while her husband ping ponged, but then she left. People would come and go, checking out the Wii but no one would play with me. Maybe I was too scary?

Overall it was a lavish night. A really well organized and entertaining event. If people wanted to stay for a party, there was opportunity there. I mean really...Usher was blasting from the disco wafting down the wooden planks to the Kenai river as we were going out to our car. (No, Vince was not impressed that I could sing along.)
When we arrived home, the kids were soundly sleeping and Valda survived with all her hair intact.

Veggie Delivering and Bus Riding

This is my last week of delivering vegetable boxes with my wonderful daughter Marina. As of next week she will be a full time student. She picked these flowers from Terri's driveway (at Moose Run Metal) and put them on my dash. I'm going to miss her company.

Falcom rode the bus home from school for the very first time. He has made some friends and is having a 'mostly' good time. There are two very sweet girls in his class who are eating lunch with him and encouraging him to play with them. He likes his substitute Alice, and his regular teacher Melon came to lunch with them. He was so happy to see her. She is doing well and will spend only one month in Anchorage undergoing treatments and then will be back. Lenore says he is doing his work-from beginning to end-and doing it pretty well. Socially, he is doing...OK...trying to figure out where he fits. Question is; will I be able to bare watching while he learns these life lessons? It's gonna take a lot of prayer and Xanex I think.

See our friend Gracie getting off the bus with Falcom? Well, she asked him to chase a girl and kiss her yesterday. So he did. (How Forest Gump does he have to be?) Big thanks to Sharon (who I did not take one picture of) for all the wonderful laughs at coffee yesterday! If she hadn't been here waiting for his bus with me, that story would have really made me want to barf.

How do parents survive watching their children go through all this stuff? I might have to figure out how to orchestrate a contest revolving around this question. The winner would be the person who gives me the best, most humorous advice... The winner would receive a gift out of Irene's re-gifting closet. (Gosh, I havn't even informed Irene of this yet...hee hee hee) Keep posted for the announcement of the contest!

The Outcome

As we prepared for school, the very first day of school, four cranes walked through our yard. It was a good omen, but, unfortunately, I continued to fret throughout the day.

We dropped Falcom at school. I met his teacher. We had our kindergarten interview with Marina's teacher. We listened proudly as she counted to 100. I whispered to Vince, "I've never heard her do that." He said, "Well, when we were driving to gold panning last week she had to pee so I made her count to 100 to distract her while I could find a pull out." Her teacher assured us that she had all of her readiness skills.

I peeked in on Falcom as we left the school. He was sitting there at his desk. Just sitting. Not a familiar face in the crowd. I reminded myself that this was such an important life skill he was learning. We all do this throughout our lives; new jobs, new communities, new friends. He will be fine! And if he is not, I will be there to help him.
Alright! I admit that I was crying during my last post. How could I not? All those children... All of them holding different parts of my heart! I decided a better use of my emotional time would be to join the Manalisay-Wise Family for lunch to say Aloha to Sarah who returns to school today. Matt was even able to join us, but I left him out of the picture because although he is cute, he is not as good looking as these three.

My girlfriends at the WW should know that my entire week has been loaded with emotional eating, including this K.A. eggplant and mozzarella sandwich. I did eat mine with salad instead of soup, but still I think this masterpiece from Maura's (formerly Pannerelli's) took up all my points from the week.

Priscilla was sad. She loves Sarah so much and hates to see her go. I was anxious, "I had everything laid out for Fal and then Amy got cancer and then Melon got cancer...I'm just going to feel so much better once he is home from school and everything went OK." I assured them that I dropped him off with my happy face and didn't get all 'emo' until I got to the car.
Vince stayed home and finished siding his new shed. I can't wait...it's almost done.

When I got home, I continued cooking. I made a cake with Oreo pudding in the middle. I also made red rice (a island dish). Finally it was time to pick up Falcom. Vince, Marina, and I met him at the door.

He was all smiles. He said goodbye to his teacher and 'see you tomorrow!'. He told us all about a girl with all Hannah Montana stuff and how she wanted a wig like he has. He told us all about lunch with Sharon Gorman. He told us about a game he played to get to know his classmates. He told us about the Russian Girls and how they were all pretty nice except for one, and that she was mean because she lives in a place where they only have white skin. This trouble is something I was preparing myself for and so I feel it is manageable.

You know this mothers heart let up a sigh of relief!

Before I knew it the big boys were home. DeeJay's schedule was great. He saw his friends. He likes his classes. It's good.

Willie had several technical difficulties (locker opening, getting lost, etc), but overall the day went well. The only class he feels he is going to have to change is pre-algebra and that is because the teacher scolded a naughty boy and kicked him out of class (no, I'm not letting him change). Any conflict makes Willie very anxious and nervous. He was still thinking about this after dinner. But I thank God for our friend Kaylene who was such a good friend to Willie, taking him around with her friends, helping him with his locker, helping him find classes. I need to get her a thank you gift or something.

In light of everyones successful first day, our celebratory dinner was a smash! Island ribs, red rice, field cabbage, broccoli, pineapple... I went to bed feeling much better...

First Day of School

And so it begins, a new page in the life of The Greear Family.

Falcom begins 3rd grade at a new school. New kids. New everything.

Willie begins his Freshman year. New school. New kids. New classes. New locker. New everything.
DeeJay begins his Junior year. New schedule. New life.
There are changes for Vince and I too. Vince with his new job and schedule. Me with being alone more than I have been in 10 years.
It is interesting figuring out how our new routine will shape up. Last year it was just the two boys in school. Now there are four. Fortunately, I think I will be able to drop every single one of them off at McNeil between 7.30 and 7.35 every day. Wow! Hard to believe...
Yea, OK... I'm a little sad... wait until Monday when Marina starts school...

Regular Tuesday with Irene (and Sarah)

Sarah is home from College. Falcom, Marina, Riley and Chris start school tomorrow. Maya...well...she's not large, but she is in charge. Even though we had a whole day to be together we were both in a haze and did not really get a lot of business done. However, we did manage to get a few topics covered:

How Sarah feels under-posted on Irene's blog. Isn't she pretty?
The necessary routine of the school year for the boys.
How I'm sad all my children will be in school.
How Irene thinks I'm a b**** because all my kids will be in school.

How she could never post this picture on her blog, even though it is awesome, because it would get all her liberal friends up in arms. I had to post it because her kids look killer and my husband did not take a picture of my kids at this exact same Fair. (Yes, The kids were all at the fair together.) She swears it was the only balloon she could find in the entire fairgrounds and that her baby girl HAD TO HAVE A BALLOON!

Lots and lots of stuff we can't blog about

Sarah's great text that RyRy sent her this morning (He's in good with Sarah again)

How Sarah scared us half to death about moving to Humboldt with her boyfriend last winter and how she doesn't even remember getting us all stressed. Well, getting Grandma all stressed.

How a woman we know is about to learn the reality of the 'Zombified Minions of the Soccer Mom Army', and how she'd better not get too bummed out when the husband she's about to dump gets a woman before she meets someone new.

How low rise jeans are even too low rise for Sarah now

Great ideas for Sharon Gorman's FOL (Focus on Learning an opportunity for high school kids to be taught something other than the basics)

How one teenager I know well gets very moody sometimes. Then calls to apologize. Awesome!

The lack of sunshine, but look here is some...

Homer from Anchorage

I can only imagine that readers of this blog have three questions at this point;

  1. Where are the pictures of the kids and Vince gold panning with Neil in Hope? Vince did not take one picture of their gold panning. No, they did not "fill up the van" as Marina was sure they would do.
  2. Who is Denice? She is the new girlfriend of our old friend Neil. This was a fun way to get to know her, since life here is too busy to really chat around the house. Oh, and we didn't really want to gold pan. She is leaving for Oregon and Hawaii in less than a week from now. Knowing Neil, this may be true love, so I thought I'd better grab a chance to make a new friend.
  3. How did I get so groovy as to be able to blog from the road? Denice is high tech and allowed me to blog from her phone. Can you imagine? The future is going to be technologically amazing!
