Easter Sunday - In Song

I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns
The stumbles and falls brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest

What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on the street where you live?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a wide sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest

I love you more than I have
Ever found a way to say
to you

Next door, there's an old Man who lived to his 90's
And one day, passed away in his sleep
And his wife, she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way
To tell you that I know we belong
That I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest

Thank you Ben Folds for the lyrics to this song, summing up all my feelings about this family.  Happy Easter

I'm also the luckiest to be honored with the noble "Shoe Structure".  Thanks Charlotte!

Falcom and Katia

Jubilee season has begun! Katia and her mom Allison were kind enough to invite Falcom to do a number with them (snippet below). Cherish plays the piano, Katia dances/swings on a trapeze, and Falcom sings. It was another long audition night; but, both kids are incredibly talented and passionate and were able to keep their energy up while they waited. These are closed auditions and I don't know about the judges, but I can safely say that Allison and I were blown away.

The House

Came home from school yesterday to find Cindi P in my kitchen whipping up a storm of food. Salmon, halibut, shrimp, fried rice bread, cake, there was more but I can't think of it all now. The house quickly filled with friends and the feast was on! Thanks everyone! That was great fun!

Art Month!

Maygen's show was a success (It was Scott's show as well, but since I don't know him well I'm going to focus on Maygen).  These buoys are not made of rubber but of clay.  Can you believe it?

The kids ran around the museum and enjoyed themselves whole heartedly while the adults ate and drank and conversed over the unveiled pieces.  It was a lovely time.

We all are very proud of you Maygen!
Meanwhile Falcom is getting ready for his shows.  He is trying out for Jubilee with an Elton John song and so we went on a costume hunt.  With new boots and this pimping jacket he has really been making a splash around town.  Unfortunately, he still does not understand that there is a time and a place for all things and that school is not the best place for this look.  We are working on it.

After the show we all went out to Land's End for a celebratory snack and drink.  It was another unseasonably warm and wonderful night filled with laughs.

Saturday night we had a bar-b-que with Maygen and Iris at her house with her mother Susan who is wonderful and who was in town for the show.  Beezer and Piper were able to come as were Willie and Kaylene.  I don't know why I don't have a picture to accompany this evening except to say that I laughed the whole time.  This would be because I felt like I had walked in on a big East Indian Family highly chaperoned dating ritual...but this is another story that I do not have permission to retell in this blog.

After Church on Sunday we headed out to the harbor for the Wedding Reception of our dearly beloved friends Wendy T. and Mike M.  On their surf boat MV Milo we gathered to warmly welcome these two into the next phase of their shared lives together.

That morning they had gone out onto the bay and exchanged vows.  Now was time to party.  On the deck of the vessel is a hot tub and they used that as a buffet table.  Mike then strapped down his first surfboard and used it as the cake table.  The sun was shining and the gulls were flying around and it was fabulous to feel so much included in what it means to be from Homer.

We are very happy for you Wendy and Mike!

Maygen and Susan made dinner for us that evening-a wonderful bar-b-qued chicken.  They were concerned we would be too full from the wedding;  but, this is the Greear Family we are talking about!  All of us were so exhausted from the weekend that we were plopping down on the furniture and unmotivated to play games or go for a walk.  Iris didn't even try to jump up from the dinner table.

This week begins the artistic week of singing!  I'll keep you posted!

Weekend

Maygen's exhibit opened at the Pratt Museum. It was followed by dinner and drinks at Lands End. Wait! Why was I not in this picture and Beezer behind the camera? It was a very exciting opening and very successful. I'll add more photography later in the weekend.

Some Semblance of Normalcy

It has been a fantastic false spring here in the North.  The sun has shined every day.  Even on the days that have seen snowfall, the afternoons have been reminiscent of Taos; the sun has come out and the warmth has melted the snow and given the ducks plenty of mud to muck around in.

This weather has been a gift to my psyche.  It has allowed me to not feel forced to focus on the endless Homer grey and instead to continue work on finding creative solutions to the problems which persist.

Problems?  In the Greear Family?  I know.  It just doesn't seem possible and yet...  For instance, the least of our troubles, housework.  Not one person in the house is attached to keeping it up.  We have talked about the problem at length.  We have all agreed that we must all take responsibility for not living in squaller.  Last night I created job charts and we talked about the incentive program.  A week ago we agreed that the incentive was $2.50 a week.  Last night, when in a teacher's voice, trying to be reflective of conversations past, I asked what their incentive was,  Falcom said, "$2.00!"  Marina said, "$10.00" and Willie said, "You know, whatever."

Vince was shaking his head in frustration.  I laughed and said, "Another perfect example of the Greear Family dynamic."  He began laughing and agreed.

Problems at school have begun to reappear.  I am mildly anxious about it.  OK!  Maybe more than a bit anxious.  One good thing though is that I have actually been hearing from the school that Falcom has been in negative interactions and that things are being done about it.  This is a positive step.  Meanwhile I continue investigating all avenues of future possibilities.

This includes the trip to California we will be making in July for him to attend a week long vocal intensive program at the Oakland School of Performing Arts.  He has applied for a scholarship which he will interview for next week.  I hope this week of singing with other people who can sing broadens his horizons and builds self esteem.  I will keep all of you posted.

Meanwhile, the Brownie troop has been very busy.  Last week we took a field trip to the McNeil Canyon fire hall where we were given a full tour and access to the facility.  This is a picture of Marina in the very ambulance that I visited during my truck accident two years ago!  What delight I felt when she stuck her head out and relived the entire event for all the children and adults who were standing around.  Thank you darling for displaying your amazing talent at recall and outstanding verbal skills!  Oh, yes, then to relive the electrical fire that the ambulance had while I was strapped down to a board and laying in there alone, watching, as it filled with smoke.  Thank you Marina.

That Saturday we were off to the Women of Science Girl Scout event in Kenai.  The girls saw presentations by women scientists.  Below is a photo of Marina creating a rocket with the Challenger Learning Center staff.
Afterwords, we drove to the Nikiski Pool where the girls spent their cookie money on fun filled four hours of non stop sliding, splashing, and swimming.  Thanks troop for being such a great bunch of super fun girls.
Whose birthday was going on while I was tromping our troop all over the Peninsula?  That would be Vince.  Another year rolls by, and once again his adoring wife comes up with no special horn blowing celebration.   Fortunately, Maygen made him a fantastic maple cheesecake and Nikki, Jason, and Valda were able to join us for a smashing Sunday dinner.

My birthday celebration problems are not due to my lack of caring or disinterest in birthdays.  Oh no!  I spent the day brainstorming what to do for the guy.  During our Girl Scout field trip my Boat Captain friend, Beezer, suggested we stop at every bar on the way back to Homer and pick Vince up a drink chip.  I thought this would be a funny gift, letting him know that I was indeed thinking of him, but Mrs. Middleton felt that this would be very unbecoming behavior for a car full of Girl Scouts.  I am so fortunate to have her as a moral compass!

We did have a great celebration and enjoyed the company of long time friends, new friends and cute babies.

Another hour has floated by.  I must stand up from the computer and get out to walk in the sunshine.  This is Homer!  And, like all things, I must enjoy it while I have it...

Marina in the Gallery

First Friday art exhibit! Featuring Marina at the Pratt Museum!
